7 Fluids to Check

n

Oil

n

What it does: Perhaps the most recognizable fluid, oil keeps your engine lubricated so that it can run properly. Depending on your vehicle’s age, oil should typically be changed every 3,000-5,000 miles.

n

How to check: After driving for about 5-10 minutes, turn off your vehicle and let the engine cool. Locate the oil dipstick and pull it out, then wipe it on a rag. Reinsert the stick and remove it. There is a marking for “safe oil level” and if the oil is below that line, then it’s time to change your oil.

n

Transmission Fluid

n

What it does: Transmission fluid is similar to oil and keeps your vehicle lubricated and cool. You can go roughly 30,000-60,000 miles on one change of fluid in an automatic vehicle and 15,000-30,000 for a manual.

n

How to check: Checking transmission fluid levels is almost the same process as checking your oil with just one additional step. Rub a little dab of the fluid between your fingers so that you can find out if it feels gritty or looks burnt. If it feels grimy or is below the “safe” line on the dipstick, it’s time for a flush.

Brake Fluid

n

n

 

n

What it does: Brake fluid does pretty much what is sounds like: it helps your brakes function properly.

n

How to check: The brake fluid box is usually located towards the back, which you can easily see when you open your car’s hood. Open the box and look inside.

If the fluid is low or is a darker color, it’s time to replace it. And if you ever notice that braking takes more effort while you’re driving, schedule a Brookings auto service right away.

Radiator Fluid

What it does: Everyone loves a clean windshield. In order to keep your driving view crystal clear, make sure the washer fluid is filled!

How to check: The container that holds the washer fluid has an icon on the cap that looks like a windshield. Take the cap off and look inside. If the container is low, fill it up or schedule a service appointment!

If you plan to purchase the fluid yourself, beware of some fluids that can freeze in cold temperatures. At your local Brookings car dealership, we make sure to use washer fluid that doesn’t freeze in the frigid South Dakota winter temperatures!

Look at our selection online for specific used cars that you want to check out. Contact us during this phase to ensure the vehicle is still available and request a test drive at your earliest convenience.  If you don’t see what you are looking for, please use our car finder feature and we can do the work to find the right vehicle for you whether it is from our customer base, lease return, at a factory auction, or even from another dealer.  This is something that we do frequently.

 Before you come in, be sure you’ve looked into the value of the vehicle and research online reviews.  It always best to prepare yourself with as much knowledge as possible.  We take pride in the quality of our pre-owned vehicles.  Every pre-owned vehicle on our lot has gone through a multi-point inspection and any items that need addressed are taken care of.  In addition, all pre-owned vehicles on our pre-owned lot come with either factory warranty or our limited 50/50 powertrain coverage.  So, you shouldn’t need to worry about any unforeseen issues.

3. Take a test drive.

Now that you’ve settled on a specific vehicle or two that you’d like to learn more about, it’s time to come on in for your visit. Call ahead of time to arrange a test drive, or just stop by.

During your test drive, try to replicate your normal driving patterns and routes. This way you’ll be able to get a feel for how the vehicle will operate on a day-to-day basis. Be sure to drive it in town, on the highway, and even on gravel roads if possible to see how well everything is holding up.

Your test drive can tell you a lot of important information about the used vehicle you’re considering. Check the brakes, transmission, and all the controls to ensure everything is working properly. Don’t be afraid to take your time and ask us any questions that come to mind!

4. Ask for records.

After running your own inspection of the vehicle, you’re welcome to ask us for our professional take on the vehicle.

We’ll also provide you with all the vehicle’s records, so you have the full history of the vehicle you’re buying.

You’re welcome to request a vehicle history report from AutoCheck or Carfax. Ask for service records so you can see if a vehicle has been maintained well throughout its lifetime.

5. Close the deal.

Before signing the papers, don’t hesitate to read them over closely.  Our finance staff can help answer any questions regarding the purchase order, finance contract, or any other documents needed to complete the deal.  Be sure you’re comfortable with your grand total–as well as any additional coverage–before you agree to it.
