Car recalls are more common than you might think. In fact, five percent of all new cars in the United States were under a recall notice in 2021. That’s over 35 million vehicles affected.

Getting your vehicle recalled can seem like a daunting task. But in reality, it is not as bad as you think it is. As long as you regularly check if your vehicle has a recall, you should have nothing to worry about. If the unfortunate case of a recall happens with your vehicle, all you have to do is follow these simple steps.

n

n

1. Check the Recall Report

n

If your vehicle has gotten a recall, it means that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the manufacturer determines that a vehicle or its equipment pose a safety risk or does not meet the standards for motor vehicle safety. Manufacturers are required to provide you with a report on what is wrong with your vehicle.

n

Most of the time, you will receive a notice letter. This will contain information such as:

n

    n

  • Details on what piece of equipment is the problem
  • n

  • Events that led up to the recall
  • n

  • What is the remedy for this recall
  • n

  • The recall schedule set in place for your vehicle
  • n

n

n

2. Bring Your Vehicle In

n

Once you fully understand the problem of your recall, it’s time to get it serviced. Find the time that works best for you on the recall schedule, and set it up with your local dealer. In most cases, recalls will still be safe to drive your vehicle in, but you can also tow your vehicle to the dealership if you don’t feel comfortable.

n

n

3. Make a Decision

n

According to the NHTSA, the manufacturer legally has to choose three options when fixing the problem on your vehicle recall. They are:

n

    n

  • Repair: The vehicle and or the part will be replaced and covered at no extra cost to you!
  • n

n

    n

  • Replace: If the problem cannot be repaired or replaced, the manufacturer will provide you with an exact replacement or a similar model.
  • n

n

    n

  • Refund: The manufacturer could choose to provide you a refund, minus depreciation costs when reasonable.
  • n

n

n

No matter what circumstance you are in, if you think your vehicle is included in a safety recall, you should contact the manufacturer immediately to figure out what your options are. It’s a great safety measure to ensure the repair is made as quickly as possible.
