Einspahr Auto Plaza

Summertime is almost over! As summer’s warmth gradually gives way to the cool embrace of fall, parents across the country find themselves gearing up for another academic year. Before you send them back to learn trigonometry and quadratic equations, make sure that their transportation situation is up to snuff.

Here at Einspahr Auto Plaza, we understand how stressful and foreign the automobile industry can be. That’s why we decided to provide our Brookings community with a vehicle checklist for going back to school.

Car Maintenance Checklist

You don’t want to have your kids stranded on their way to school, right?

Make sure their vehicle is performing at its best. We recommend that you either bring in the vehicle for a service appointment or even check certain parts of the vehicle yourself.

Here is what we recommend to check before having your kids drive their vehicle into school.

    1. Check the Vehicle’s Oil Level
      • Make sure that you engine’s oil level is not low. Also check to see the quality of it based on the mileage since your last oil change.
    1. Check the Headlights
      • Always check to see if your high beams and low beams are functioning properly. It’s a major safety concern and could lead to a ticket.
    1. Check the Brakes
      • See how thick the brake pads are on your vehicle. If they are looking pretty thin, it’s probably not safe for travel.
    1. Check the Fluids
      • Make sure your engine oil, coolant, power steering, brake , transmission, and winsheld washer fluid levels are ok.
    1. Check the Battery
      • You don’t want to deal with being stranded on the road because of a bad battery. Make sure that the voltage coming from the battery is sufficient enough to power your vehicle.

First Time Drivers

Whether you’re buying your first vehicle or you’re a parent trying to find a good first ride for a new driver, it can be a challenge to actually know what vehicle is the best fit. We’ve come up with a few questions for you to consider before deciding on your perfect vehicle.

How Safe and Reliable is The Vehicle?

We understand that first time drivers will most likely drive a car that’s more affordable but that doesn’t mean the quality of that vehicle should be terrible. Make sure that the vehicle you are looking at has a full history report on it. If they don’t have the full report, ask the dealer information about the vehicle

How Does the Vehicle Drive?

The best way to be sure the vehicle drives well on the road and feels right for the driver is to get to the lot and take a test drive for yourself. Easily schedule your test drive online and get the look and feel of the vehicle for yourself.

How Will You Use the Vehicle?

Another thing to consider when deciding on first vehicles is how the vehicle will be used. Thinking some of these through can help you narrow down your options to just what you need.

Are you planning on long road trips to college with this vehicle? You should find something with less miles on it with great MPG.

Does the vehicle need to be larger to fit more people or more cargo, or is a simple sedan all the space that’s needed? Consider this when deciding between certain body styles.

College Kid Checklists

Sending your kid to college is a little bit different than sending your kid to high school. In most cases, college is pretty far away. If they are dealing with a situation far from home, it’s unreasonable to think that you can be there to save the day. So before your kid heads off to future learning and tailgates in the fall, make sure that their vehicle is ready to go.

1. Vehicle Information

It’s important to make sure that your college student has all available information on their vehicle. Picture this, your child gets pulled over by policemen, and they say “Driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance!” If they aren’t familiar with that information, they are going to be in big trouble. Make sure they have that information available at all times when driving. We recommend keeping it in the glove compartment of your vehicle.

2. Emergency Pack Checklist

Being far away from home, it is important to make sure that they take precautions in case of an emergency. For example, on the drives back to and from home during winter and spring break and the car breaks down — what do you do?. Make sure that they pack an emergency kit with things such as:

    1. Flashlight
    2. Extra clothing
    3. Food
    4. Water
    5. Jumper cables

 Summer Road Trip

n

After a harsh winter season, it’s pretty common for people to get summer fever. But before you get too ahead of yourself and embark on your summer adventures, take some time to make sure your vehicle is ready for your road trips.

n

Here at Einspahr Auto Plaza, we like to think that our customers in the Brookings area are family! We don’t want to see your summer vacation start off with car issues and you being stranded on the side of a highway. Here are some tips and tricks to get your vehicle ready for your summer road trips.

n

n

n

n

 1. Prepare and Prevent

n

It’s better to prepare and prevent rather than repair and repent. Planning a road trip for the worst possible outcome is a grim way of thinking about summer vacations, but it is a necessity to make sure you and your family are safe.

n

n

Bringing along extra supplies like water, food and a first aid kit are good things to have in case of an emergency. If your car breaks down in an area you are not familiar with, you might be stranded for a while.

n

n

You should also think about bringing along items for your vehicle.ere is what we recommend:

n

    n

  • Jumper cables
  • n

  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • n

  • Spare tire
  • n

  • Gas
  • n

n

n

2. Check Your Tires

n

It’s not ideal dealing with a flat tire on your road trips. Usually, you’re far away from your home, it’s hot outside and changing your tire can be a grueling process. To prevent all of this unwanted stress, all you need to do is check your tires out before your trip!

n

Make sure all of your tires (even your spare tire) don’t have any cuts or gouges. Check on the tread of your tires. An easy way to know if the tread is fine on your tires is the penny test. Lastly, inspect all your tires’ air pressure. Check them when the car is idle and the tires are cool. You can find the correct air pressure for your tires in the owner’s manual of your vehicle or on the sticker on the driver side door.

n

n

3. Check Your Fluids

n

Top off your oil, brake, coolant, transmission, and power steering fluids at the correct levels for a smooth trip. You can find the correct levels and products by looking at your owner’s manual. Check them yourself or visit your local service department at Einspahr Auto.

n

n

4. Check Your Brakes

n

We can all agree that brakes are important for driving a vehicle right? Listen for any abnormal noises when you apply your brakes. Hear a grinding noise or feeling weird vibrations? Visit a service professional to check if they need to be replaced or not.

n

n

5. Check Your A.C.

n

It’s important to keep cool in the summer. Overheating can lead to some serious health problems for you and your family. Make sure your vehicle blows cold air when turning on the A.C. Also, make sure that the air coming out from the vents smells fresh. If you are getting a dirty/unclean smell, it might be time to replace the cabin air filter.

n

n

6. Check Your Belts and Hoses

n

Inspect for any wear or tear on your belts and hoses. Belts power the water pump, alternator,  and air conditioning compressor. Make sure to check for cracks or frayed belts to ensure you don’t need a replacement. A general rule for replacing belts is roughly every 60,000 miles.

n

n

Last but not least, make sure your vehicle’s hoses are performing optimally. Look for leaks from cracked or worn hoses by checking around the hose clamps and also around places like the water pump and radiator.

Summertime is almost upon us. As the temperature gets warmer, people are spending more time outside and traveling for vacations. Whether you are going on camping trips or spending a week at the lake, there is one common problem that may arise; hooking up your trailer, camper, or boat to your vehicle!

n

n

Hooking your vehicle up to a trailer always has some unwanted tension/stress, especially if other people are watching. Trying to perfectly line up your vehicle’s hitch on the first try is a daunting task and usually takes a lot of embarrassing forwards and reverses until you finally get lucky.

n

n

Ford has new trucks with Pro Trailer Hitch Assist. It’s an artificial intelligence system that uses the rear camera and corner radars to align the hitch with the trailer. It also controls the truck’s speed, steering, and braking to stop and align at the right spot. All you have to do is just push a button and watch the magic happen!

n

n

If you don’t have Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, this blog will provide you with some tips and tricks to make hooking up your trailer a breeze this summer.

n

n

Grab a Partner

n

It is much easier to hook up a trailer when you have someone guiding you. Before you start, talk with your partner about hand signals to use. Have them stand on the driver’s side of the trailer. Also, make sure they are clearly visible before you start to back up

n

n

No Partner, No Problem

n

If you don’t have the luxury of someone guiding you, that’s fine. All you have to do is line your vehicle up with the trailer in a straight line. A straight shot at the trailer serves a better chance than when you are trying to reach it at an angle.

n

n

Raise The Trailer Jack

n

Make sure your trailer coupler is higher than your vehicle’s hitch. Usually you want it a few inches higher. That way the hitch can clear the coupler in case you back up too far.

n

n

Line Up the Hitch and the Trailer

n

Once you get about three feet away from the trailer coupler, start looking for more cues from your partner. If you don’t have a partner, put your vehicle in park and check the distance and angles you have from the trailer. Reduce your speed and use caution with the last few feet.

n

n

Anticipate the Brake Drag

n

One thing people don’t realize when backing up to a trailer is that your vehicle will have a brake drag. When putting your vehicle in park and releasing your brakes, there tends to be a bit of drag resulting in the vehicle going back. To anticipate this, put your vehicle in park about six inches from the trailer coupler. Make sure to communicate this with your partner so they can anticipate this.

n

n

Lower The Trailer Jack

n

Once your vehicle has reached the trailer, lower the trailer jack onto your vehicle’s hitch. Even if the coupler is a little off, the trailer should adjust to it and slide on.

n

n

Once the trailer coupler is on the hitch, latch it on and attach the chains in a cross pattern and connect the trailer wiring. Retract your trailer jack and you should be good to go!

n

n

Have a Checklist

n

Another thing to have is a trailer hookup checklist. Making sure that the trailer lights are working, the brakes are working well with the trailer hooked, and the safety chains are properly attached, will lead to a safe trip!

Car recalls are more common than you might think. In fact, five percent of all new cars in the United States were under a recall notice in 2021. That’s over 35 million vehicles affected.

n

n

Getting your vehicle recalled can seem like a daunting task. But in reality, it is not as bad as you think it is. As long as you regularly check if your vehicle has a recall, you should have nothing to worry about. If the unfortunate case of a recall happens with your vehicle, all you have to do is follow these simple steps.

n

n

1. Check the Recall Report

n

If your vehicle has gotten a recall, it means that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the manufacturer determines that a vehicle or its equipment pose a safety risk or does not meet the standards for motor vehicle safety. Manufacturers are required to provide you with a report on what is wrong with your vehicle.

n

n

Most of the time, you will receive a notice letter. This will contain information such as:

n

    n

  • Details on what piece of equipment is the problem
  • n

  • Events that led up to the recall
  • n

  • What is the remedy for this recall
  • n

  • The recall schedule set in place for your vehicle
  • n

n

n

2. Bring Your Vehicle In

n

Once you fully understand the problem of your recall, it’s time to get it serviced. Find the time that works best for you on the recall schedule, and set it up with your local dealer. In most cases, recalls will still be safe to drive your vehicle in, but you can also tow your vehicle to the dealership if you don’t feel comfortable.

n

n

3. Make a Decision

n

According to the NHTSA, the manufacturer legally has to choose three options when fixing the problem on your vehicle recall. They are:

n

    n

  • Repair: The vehicle and or the part will be replaced and covered at no extra cost to you!
  • n

n

    n

  • Replace: If the problem cannot be repaired or replaced, the manufacturer will provide you with an exact replacement or a similar model.
  • n

n

    n

  • Refund: The manufacturer could choose to provide you a refund, minus depreciation costs when reasonable.
  • n

n

n

No matter what circumstance you are in, if you think your vehicle is included in a safety recall, you should contact the manufacturer immediately to figure out what your options are. It’s a great safety measure to ensure the repair is made as quickly as possible.

Let’s face it… gas prices are not ideal right now.

n

n

Prices seem to be staying up there for the near future with no clear decline in sight. You could hop on the EV trend but that might be ideal for your specific situation. So what are your options?

n

n

You could just mope and complain with your counterparts about how back in your day, gas cost less than three dollars a gallon, or you could take steps to make your vehicle perform better and consume less fuel!

n

You’re probably wondering what these steps are. Well, we’re here to tell you. We’re here to help our Brookings community spend less time at the gas pump and more time driving! Here are five tips to improve your gas mileage.

n

n

1. Drive Smarter Not Harder

n

This might sound a little strange and confusing but believe it or not, gas gets eaten up quicker when you slam on your accelerator and brakes. The solution to this problem is simple — accelerate and brake SLOWLY.

n

n

We know you want to get to your destination as fast as possible, but that is not the most efficient way for your vehicle to perform. Driving more sensible and not treating every commute like a Nascar race will in-turn lead to better gas savings!

n

n

2. Develop Better Driving Habits

n

This tip might take awhile for it to be a normal thing in your daily commutes, but developing more efficient driving habits will eventually less gas being expended. What are these driving habits? Glad you asked.

n

n

Pick Better Driving Routes

n

Don’t pick the routes with a bunch of stop signs, construction zones, or intersections. Pick the commute that will keep your car MOVING. Starting and stopping your vehicle leads to more fuel being used. Plan your routes through GPS that way you are driving the most optimal route!

n

n

Don’t Let Your Vehicle Idle

n

You might want to finish that last part of your favorite song before turning your engine off, but you’re wasting precious fuel that could lead to more miles on the road.

n

n

It might be nice to still have the heat or A/C going when you’re finishing up a call, but the car being idle eats up the mileage left in your gas tank. Try and limit your vehicle idling whether you are sitting in traffic or in your driveway.

n

n

Set Your Cruise Control (When Applicable)

n

Like we said earlier, stopping and accelerating leads to more gas being used. If you are doing a longer road trip on the interstate, it’s best to have your cruise control set at the posted speed limit. This keeps your vehicle moving at a good pace, which leads to a better MPG.

n

n

3. Fill Your Tank When It’s Cooler Outside

n

Not to get super nerdy here, but gas is dispensed based on the volume of it. Filling your vehicle’s tank when it is the coolest outside — typically early in the morning or late at night — leads to the fuel being more dense. This means that you will get more fuel for the same amount of money, which gives you a bigger bang for your buck!

n

n

4. Keep Your Car in Tip-Top Shape

n

This may be common sense, but if you treat your vehicle right, it will perform better because of it. Doing routine maintenance on your vehicle will give better gas mileage in the long run. Here are some things you can do to keep your car performing optimally.

n

n

Keep Your Tires at the Right Air Pressure

n

Tires that are underinflated give you terrible gas mileage. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy reported 1.25 billion gallons of gasoline are wasted each year on underinflated tires. Make sure to check your vehicle’s tire pressure every week to make sure they are properly inflated.

n

n

Check Tire Alignment

n

Tires that are not aligned means more drag which eventually leads to reduced MPG. Improper alignment leads to a 10{83951c3c923d19e44167f79798e64c4aae41df40e53a089bc0d08f070d69866f} decrease in a vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Plus, misaligned tires tend to wear out quicker than aligned ones.

n

n

Replace Bad Spark Plugs

n

If you see a sudden drop in your vehicle’s gas mileage, it probably means it’s because of misfiring spark plugs. You can check those yourself or even get it serviced at a dealership like Einspahr Auto Plaza.

n

n

5. Get Rid of that Extra Clutter

n

Less weight in the vehicle means less stuff to move. It makes sense right? Get rid of that extra stuff you’ve been holding on to in the back seat and watch your vehicle’s gas mileage go up! Don’t believe us? A recent study showed that an extra 100 pounds in your vehicle drops its MPG by 1{83951c3c923d19e44167f79798e64c4aae41df40e53a089bc0d08f070d69866f}!

Person giving money

n

n

The car-buying process can be a stressful time for most people. However, most of the stress comes from not being prepared. Whether it was from school, your parents, or maybe even your coaches, you probably learned early on that preparation is key to success. Being prepared or considering things before buying your next vehicle is very important.

n

Our goal at Einspahr Auto Plaza is to treat our customers like family and make your car-buying experience as stress-free as possible. That’s why we’re sharing four points to consider before buying your next vehicle.

n

n

1. Find the Vehicle that Fits Your Needs

n

n

This seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many customers set their eyes on vehicles that don’t suit their own needs.

n

n

For example, if you have a big family, you may want to consider an SUV.

n

n

Do you do a lot of farm work or tend to haul a trailer? You may want to consider a heavy duty truck.

n

n

Do you do a lot of city driving? You should consider a more compact vehicle with better mpg.

n

In the long run, you need to remember there is a difference between a want and a need. Don’t get a vehicle that just fits your wants, get one that fits your needs.

n

n

2. Know Your Limits

n

n

It’s very easy for customers to get distracted from all the bells and whistles of the car-buying experience. Going to a car dealership could be considered as the adult version of a kid at a candy store.

n

n

It’s important to have your budget set in stone. Often, there are additional fees included with the car’s MSRP or sticker price. You may be unable to afford the vehicle you’re interested in due to factors such as taxes, interest rates, and maintenance costs. Keep your eyes on the prize that will fit your financial situation and block out all the noise.

n

n

3. Do Your Homework

n

n

You would never take a test without doing your homework, right? Doing some research on the vehicle you’re thinking about purchasing goes a long way.

n

n

Here are some things to research before sealing the deal on your next vehicle:

n

    n

  • Look at the car’s history report
  • n

  • Compare the vehicle’s price range with other dealers
  • n

  • Look at the repair history of the vehicle
  • n

  • Schedule a test drive with multiple models
  • n

n

n

4. Know When to Walk Away

n

n

You’ve heard the saying, “there are plenty of fish in the sea.” Well, guess what? There are plenty of cars at the dealership.

n

n

If you feel that something isn’t right with the vehicle, the price is just a little out of your price range, or if you feel like it doesn’t meet your wants and needs — don’t be afraid to walk away.

How long have you been with Einspahr?

n

-“I have been with Einspahr for 19 years in May.”

n

n

What is the best part of your job or why do you look forward to going to work each day?

n

“I like making sure my customers are taken care of to the best of my ability. So my customers are what keeps me coming back.”

n

n

What advice would you give to a new team member?

n

“You are going to have things that are not going to go as planned. Try to keep a level head about it and explain to your customers what is going on with their vehicle. Know your customers. That definitely makes it more personal. I have customers now that we also service their children’s vehicle so that is kind of fun. Seeing them go from little kids to young adults. And of course, just be KIND!!!”

How long have you been with Einspahr?

n

“I have been at Einspahrs for 7 years in May.”

n

n

What is the best part of your job or why do you look forward to going to work each day?

n

“I look forward to coming in to work each day and meeting new customers, and working with my existing customers to find vehicles that suit their needs.”

n

n

What advice would you give to a new team member?

n

“My advice to a new team would be to be yourself and enjoy being around the Einspahr Family.”

n

How long have you been with Einspahr?

n

“I have been at Einspahr Auto Plaza coming up on 5 years.”

n

n

What is the best part of your job or why do you look forward to going to work each day?

n

“I enjoy helping people. Finding that perfect vehicle for the customer is very rewarding. I also enjoy the people I work with; EAP is one big family.”

n

n

What advice would you give to a new team member?

n

“The advice that I would give a new team member would be that you are not going to know everything right away, and that is okay. Things are constantly evolving/changing in this industry. It takes time to learn all the product. A positive attitude, and good work ethic will go a long way in this business.”

n

n

Congratulations to all of these winners for their hard work this year — this team wouldn’t be what it is without them!

n

A recent customer of our newest Employee of the Year Chris Vostad had this to say about his customer service:

n

n

“Recently I was having trouble with my vehicle starting. Chris Vostad managed to get me in that day and get my starter replaced. It’s so great to come to a place that knows me and my vehicle. Thanks Einspahr.”

n

n

It’s this kind of service and connection to the community we look for in an employee, and why Chris’ peers voted him our Employee of the Year.

n

n

We couldn’t have made it through this year without every member of our team putting in their best work every day, and we want to especially recognize these three guys for their work this past quarter and year.

n

n

What’s in store for Einspahr in 2023?

n

This team is excited to find out!
